Burnside High’s leaky building repairs By Gabrielle Stuart DESIGN FLAWS are believed to be responsible for leaks in the six-year-old $4 million Burnside High School art and technology block. Similar leaks have also been found in the school administration buildings. They will be repaired as part of a $24 million repair and

redevelopment work plan at the school, which is set to start this year. The cost of fixing the leaks is not yet known, but is expected to be assessed in the next few weeks. The building has been leaking for more than two years, but work to fix it was put on hold while the Ministry of Education assessed other earthquake

repairs and redevelopment work at the school. Burnside principal Phil Holstein said the repair was initially not expected to be done until 2022. It was brought forward to this year, as the school was worried damage would be done to the building if the leaks were not repaired, he said. He said the architectural

design of the buildings was believed to be responsible for the leaks. “Across the country, a lot of school designs with this style of architecture, particularly flat roof buildings, a lot of them have weather tightness issues,” he said. Alongside the repair work, he said the school was set to be refurbished and modernised.

“We want to provide the best learning environment we can for our students here, and that’s ultimately what we’re after,” he said. Bringing the work forward meant the school could start the master-planning process with the Ministry of Education soon, he said. •Turn to page 8

Mother Nature rains down on school netball tournament While most of the city was sheltering away from the terrible weather conditions last week, hardy students were out in the elements competing in the South Island secondary schools junior netball tournament. Rangi Ruru Girls’ School and St Margaret’s College year 10 sides battled it out at the Christchurch Netball Centre in Hagley Park until it got too bad and the game had to be called off. The tournament was celebrating its 20th anniversary, but Mother Nature had other ideas. The competition, held from July 10-12, saw year 9 and 10 teams from around the South Island compete. The grand finals were able to be played after St Margaret’s came to the rescue and offered their gym for the tournament. •Full story, page 16

News No library bus for Merivale By Julia Evans THE MERIVALE Precinct Society is worried about the lack of facilities for its ageing population. So the residents’ group came up with a solution – to put the mobile library bus stop there again. Deputy chairwoman Denise Leighs approached the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board, which raised the issue with the city council. However, the city council said Merivale does not meet the criteria to get the mobile library bus back anytime soon. Carolyn “The mobile Robertson library idea was discussed at (the Merivale Precinct Society’s) May meeting as an ongoing conversation about the lack of facilities for the ageing population,” Mrs Leighs said. She said the library bus used to stop in Merivale before the earthquakes outside the JDV cafe entrance on Aikmans Rd. But city council libraries and information manager Caroline

Volunteers honoured for service

AWARD: Former Belfast School principal Peter Simpson was honoured for his service.

VOLUNTEERS were honoured for their contributions to the community at the PapanuiInnes Community Board Community Service awards. Vicki Campbell Ms Campbell has positively influenced the lives of many young people and adults through mentoring and running fitness sessions. She has also coached rugby and rugby league in Papanui for the past eight years, supported the Northcote Friday after school programme and helped with the Pasifika Cultural Festival. Ms Campbell has worked with youth at Te Ora Hou for the past 13 years and her generosity and willingness to go above the beyond for people makes her a valuable role model especially to young Maori and Pasifika women. Nicholas Christensen Mr Christensen has been involved with the city council graffiti programme since 2011. The role benefits the community and those driving through it by having any graffiti removed in a timely manner. Sheila Denley Ms Denley has been

supporting the Papanui Baptist Freedom Trust’s mainly music project for over five years. She began by helping in the kitchen and continues to offer her help there as well as with the supervision and guidance of multiple children during the music session. Julian Dent Mr Dent has donated his time and energy for the past 10 years in keeping the grounds of the iconic St Paul’s Anglican Church in an immaculate condition. By keeping the grounds so beautiful, Mr Dent has created a space that parishioners, visitors, tourists, pedestrians and commuters can enjoy. He also conducts guided tours during Heritage Week. Norma Edwards Ms Edwards has been supporting the Papanui Baptist Freedom Trust’s mainly music project for more than ten years. She went along one day to help in the kitchen and has been back weekly ever since. She not only makes great drinks, she often makes special treats and does all the shopping to keep families

well fed and hydrated. She is known to everyone as Grandma. Debbie Ewings Ms Ewings has been supporting the Papanui Baptist Freedom Trust’s mainly music project for nearly eight years. She is an enthusiastic member of the team and competently operates the somewhat temperamental sound and vision equipment to ensure a full programme is available. Bill and Debbie Frame Mr and Mrs Frame have been involved with the city council graffiti programme since 2012. Having the graffiti removed has also proven to reduce further incidents, which contributes to keeping the cost of graffiti removal down for the rate payer. Donna Higgs-Herrick Ms Higgs Herrick wears many hats in her volunteer service for the Canterbury Down Syndrome Association, which she coordinates. She also fundraises, organises events and supports other parents experiencing the challenges and triumphs of

having a child with special needs. Ms Higgs-Herrick established the Listen group which facilitates guest speakers to visit organisations and talk about youth culture. She makes herself available to talk to parents who have children with special needs, imparting her experience and extensive knowledge not only of disabilities but access to the health and education systems. Joanne Le Gros Ms Le Gros has been a volunteer for scouting for 20 years and is happily dedicated to the children she serves. She does a minimum of 12 hours a week on planning and running scout activities and teaching children life skills. Fay Malloch Ms Malloch has been supporting the Papanui Baptist Freedom Trust’s mainly music project for more than 10 years. She has been a constant help in the kitchen as well as with the music sessions for many years. to the community Sian Nihoniho Ms Nihoniho has been a key volunteer with the Papanui Baptist Freedom Trust’s friendship Friday community lunch for more than 13 years. She has played a variety of roles in that time, in particular as part of the leadership team working with the community. Over the years the lunch has attracted a large number of community members who have disabilities, mental illnesses, chronic illnesses, are elderly, unemployed or are from minority ethnic groups. Yvonne Palmer Ms Palmer has been serving the public as a Justice of the Peace for more than 15 years. She has also been an active panellist and facilitator for the Community Justice Panel since its inception five years ago. As a former Shirley-Papanui Community Board chairwoman and member, she has always been very active beyond the call of duty and still has an extensive network of contacts. Ms Palmer is also a marriage and funeral celebrant, often performing these roles voluntarily.

Peter Simpson Mr Simpson has been the principal at Belfast School for 23 years and has served the Belfast Community Network since 2006. During that time he has volunteered his own time to support community events and meetings. The children, staff, local families and the community have all benefitted from the pivotal role Mr Simpson has undertaken in the Belfast community. Tony Simpson Mr Simpson has been involved with the city council graffiti programme since it was piloted. The overwhelming support and commitment from

volunteers like Mr Simpson have contributed to the success of this programme and the reduction of graffiti. Knit and Knatter The group started in 2007 with five members. The group now has more than 15 members who meet once a fortnight for two hours at the Shirley Community Trust premises. But each of them knit for approximately two or three hours each day. The group has knitted and crocheted a large variety of items such as blankets, beanies and baby items. Last year the group produced 2000 knitted items and so far this year it has knitted 636. The knitting is passed onto a variety of organisations,

Rotary Club of Belfast Kaiapoi The rotary club was established in 1969 and has been providing services to the community ever since. It works tirelessly to fundraise for community projects in Belfast, Redwood and Kaiapoi. This service group has a major fundraiser each year where members grow and sell over $50,000 of potatoes. The funds raised are donated back to the local community. Rotary members have ensured all Belfast junior touch module teams have sponsored shirts as well as outfitting the Belfast Community Network with new office furniture, providing youth leadership programmes and support to local schools with various requirements from computers to funds for children who are unable to pay for activities.

It was great to see the team overcome its loss at the hands of Oracle during the campaign in San Francisco in 2013, he said. Mr Bennett was one of about 6000 who braved the freezing conditions to celebrate the team’s 7-1 victory in Bermuda. It’s just that this was a house damaged back in the earthquakes and the chimney had been removed. The result was quite fortunate really, with smoke filling the ceiling and then the house itself. Fortunate because that smoke was all that happened. Could easily have resulted in the loss of the home. We go to any number of false alarms at buildings with smoke detectors. Some are from accidental causes, where smoke from

cooking or dust from workmen sanding, set the alarms off. Last Thursday’s call to the Riccarton Clinic was a bit different. A plaster cast was being cut off a patient. Seems the plaster dust was enough to activate the alarm. Result was a full evacuation. Finally, the retrieval of a seal pup from Fitzgerald Ave and its return to the Avon was accomplished by the city’s red watch fire crew on Wednesday. Hope Mum was about.

But it was bitterly cold, some snow fell and on the hills it managed to settle. I’m sure the weather did have some effect, however, with 16 motor accidents attended by our crews in the week. We did have the odd other call that could have been attributed to the weather. Although the incident attended by Harewood and Addington crews in Hornby last Friday had its origin in ignorance rather than iciness. A fire was lit in the fireplace by a shivering occupant.

By Andrew King RAIN, HAIL and sleet could not stop the St Andrew’s College year 9 netball team from winning their grade in the South Island secondary schools junior netball tournament on Wednesday. St Andrew’s beat Dunedin’s St Hilda’s Collegiate 33-12 in the final. However, due to the appalling weather conditions, the final was transferred from the

Christchurch Netball Centre to the St Margaret’s College gym. Unfortunately, they were unable to play most of the other final games due to snow falling. St Andrew’s breezed past Kaiapoi High in the opening round 54-12 before beating St Kevin’s College 39-13 and Marlborough Girls’ High 31-18. They backed those results up by beating Rolleston College

39-13, St Margaret’s 40-19 and Mt Aspiring College 34-14. The semi-final against Villa Maria College was tighter with St Andrew’s getting past them 30-24. Tournament director Penny Martin said it was a great event which was, unfortunately, let down by the weather. “After two full days of playing their little hearts out, it was a shame to cancel those last games,” she said. Rangi Ruru Girls’ High

came third equal with Villa Maria in the year 9 grade and St Margaret’s were fifth equal. Christchurch Girls’ High came third equal with Southland Girls’ High in the year 10 grade, while St Andrew’s was fifth equal with St Hilda’s. The tournament, now in its 20th year, attracted 88 year 9 and 10 teams to compete for glory over the three-day event, which is held every year at the Christchurch Netball Centre.

New treatment for fungal nails Feet First, the long-established podiatry clinic in Upper Riccarton, now has a much more efficient and effective means of dealing with the problem of fungal nails, thanks to a new machine they recently obtained from Britain, where it was designed and trialled. Clearanail is a procedure where the Podiatrists use a machine to make tiny holes in the nail without affecting the nail bed – a completely pain-free procedure that then allows the topical application of antifungal solution to directly reach the problem area. Fungal nails may cause the toenail to thicken, which consequently can make shoes feel uncomfortable. Anyone who believes they have a fungal infection of the nails is invited to make an appointment for a

consultation with Feet First so one of the qualified Podiatrists can assess if that is the case, and if so, will recommend the Clearanail procedure. This involves the initial treatment, and three follow-up appointments at monthly intervals to check progress. “Fungal nail infections won’t disappear immediately,” clinic director Charlotte Russell says, “so people need to commit to the process, which can take up to four months as the nail grows.”

CHICKEN BREAST WITH MUSHROOM STUFFING AND MARSALA GLAZE Ingredients 1 Garlic clove 1 Shallot, or small onion, diced 15g Butter 50g White Button mushrooms 2 slices Bread, stale and diced 1 Tbsp Parsley, finely chopped 1 Lemon, zest 2 Chicken breasts 1 Tbsp Oil 3 Tbsp Marsala, or sherry 2 Tbsp Cream Directions Stuffing In a small frying pan, fry the garlic and shallot in the butter until translucent. Add the mushrooms and fry for 2-3min until cooked. Add the breadcrumbs, cooking until the butter has been absorbed. Take off the heat, add the parsley and lemon zest and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. To cook the chicken Heat the oven to 180 deg C.

Dressing ½ cup Avocado oil ¼ cup Cider vinegar 1 tsp Sugar 1 tsp Mustard 1 tsp Salt 1 to taste Cracked black pepper Directions Stuff the chicken breast by lifting the tenderloin up (if there is no tenderloin, ignore this). Press half of the stuffing on to the breast meat. Cover the stuffing with the tenderloin. Wrap the breast with kitchen string to secure the stuffing in place and tie. Repeat with second breast. Heat a frying pan and add oil. Add the breasts skin side down and season with salt. When browned on one side, turn and season again. After 3min, place the pan in the hot oven for a further 10-12min or until cooked. Remove from the oven and cover with foil to rest for 5min. To serve, place the chicken on a chopping board and remove the string.

Slice in half and place on a warmed plate. Cover with foil while you make the sauce. Return the pan of chicken juices to the hob. Add the marsala or sherry and let it reduce for 2-3min (this is called de-glazing). Add the cream and taste for seasoning. Pour the sauce over the chicken. You may need to pour over through a sieve to remove any burnt pan leftovers. Season with freshly ground black pepper. Serve with potatoes and greens.

Thaw beans. Peel grey skin off beans. Wash snow peas and cut in half lengthways. Cut avocado in half, then remove stones and peel. Chop avocado roughly. Wash tomatoes and cut in half. Toss beans, snow peas, avocado and tomatoes with dressing. Dressing: Combine avocado oil, vinegar, sugar, mustard, salt and pepper.

1 pinch Salt 1 pinch Ground cinnamon ¼ cup Orange juice, use up to ½ cup Directions Nip any little loose ends from the yams. Boil or steam for 1015min or until cooked. Preheat the oven to 190 deg C. Place the yams in a lightly buttered 28cm oval baking dish. Drain the apricots reserving the syrup. Place the apricots over the yams. Combine the sugar, cornflour, salt and cinnamon in a saucepan. Combine the syrup with enough orange juice to make ¾ of a cup. Stir into the sugar mixture and heat, stirring, until thickened. Pour over the apricots and yams. Bake for 20min, until sizzling and lightly browned.

Christchurch is entering a new and exciting phase and the recent inauguration of ChristchurchNZ bringing together four key sectors; Tourism, International Education, Business Innovation and the new Convention Bureau, is a demonstration of the city’s commitment to make Christchurch a great destination to visit and to study and work in! International students are on the rise, and Alpha Homestays Limited (AHSL) is building on the proud history of Student Links to facilitate good matching of international students with local New Zealand families as they pursue their various study options. AHSL provides services to Alpha Educational Institute (AEI), in Sheffield Crescent (where Margaret Bray and Jude Cochrane look after our office); the National Trade Academy (NTA), a land-based training centre near Orana Park; the International Aviation Academy of New Zealand (IAANZ), in Pound Road, which trains pilots, and the Air New Zealand Aviation Institute (AirNZAI), in Orchard Road, who train the Aircraft Engineers! So, we do have our work cutout these days and are definitely looking to broaden our Homestay base – hence the accompanying advertisement!

Currently the age-range that AHSL caters for is from 12-years old to mature adults. The younger students (mostly teenagers) are generally in AEI’s High School Preparation Programme and the adult students are preparing for further tertiary study or are already enrolled in one of the tertiary institutions mentioned. The recent nationality mix has included Chinese and Taiwanese, Japanese, South Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai, Indian, and several of our South American countries! AHSL is very attentive to the need to support both the homestay families and the international students, and so pastoral care oversight is a high priority. We are very mindful of the significant ‘Adjustment Curve’ that all the students go through, no matter what their age! After all, they are changing country and culture and language of learning! This means different food, climate, lifestyles, customs, and of course the challenge of learning and communicating in English! We try to imagine ourselves in the reverse scenario and we can totally empathise! We hope many of you will consider joining the AHSL Team!

INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS: The National Brass Band of New Zealand, which includes 13 Christchurch members, were runners-up in a section of the World Music Contest.

Woolston Brass members play big role in international success CHRISTCHURCH musicians feature prominently in the National Brass Band of New Zealand, which was named runner-up in the brass band section of the World Music Contest. A third of the band members are from Christchurch, with all but one playing for Woolston Brass. The contest is held every four years in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. The New Zealand band’s programme opened with Whakarangatiratanga, commissioned from New Zealand composer Gareth Farr. The programme also featured a new major work written for the band by renowned English composer Peter Graham. The 39th Parallel is based on the landscape and mythology of the Wanganui region in memory of brass band

The Christchurch School of Music is a family-oriented community aimed at providing quality music education in and around Christchurch. CSM is a not-for-profit organisation with a strong focus on community. On a Saturday morning the whole family can find something to suit. Preschool and junior school children can start their musical journey by joining in our experiential “Take Off with Music” while older children and adults may opt for group or individual lessons on a specific instrument (including voice). Those who already play are welcome to join in one of the great ensembles which all take part in regular concerts including Saturday soirees and the popular annual Showcase Concert. LEArning firST aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. Take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen.

They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

The facts about home ventilation Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. Traditional domestic ventilation systems are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from outside via the roof space and force the stale air out through gaps around windows and doors. The incoming air from these systems has to be heated or cooled to keep the house warm in winter or cool in summer. The Smooth-Air HEX390 is a ‘balanced pressure’ system.
